The garment seeks to restrain and dehumanize the wearer, while also providing protection. Adjustable straps restrict movement and posture, while an enclosed, eared hood limits sensory input and animalizes the wearer. A padded chest piece, secondary back plate, and the aforementioned hood, offer abundant protection at the expense of comfort. This is not clothing made for the wearer’s benefit, but rather for the use of someone else. The zipper, straps, and laces are positioned for another’s convenience. Aerodynamic elements on the outer skirt suggest pockets that only work if the wearer were to walk on all fours. Finally, a steel fixture supported by the back of the garment evokes a backpack, with the possibility of additional modular fixtures.
Most of the garments are constructed from a heavy hand-dyed denim, with a lighter muslin used for the skirt volumes. All the fabrics were dyed by yardage, and crumpled to produce a marbled, natural pattern. A neutral, grayish-purple was chosen for the skirt to easily conceal mud, dirt, and wear. The green color of the outer pieces blends into the environment. Edges are finished with bias tape for a sturdy, long-lasting construction, and certain straps are fitted with steel buckles. Buckles like these are used in the leashes of attack dogs, and are designed for quick-release.
Despite its utilitarian goals, the garment has not been designed without care for aesthetics. Once brought indoors and sheltered from the elements, the outer pieces can be removed to release pleated volumes in the form-fitting skirt, giving the garment a more showy appearance.
